W1 Design and Access Statements, how to write, read and use them
Tuesday 13 May 2008, 9.00am – 1.00pm
Palestra, 197 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8AA.
Across the country, over 150,000 planning applications per year now require design and access statements. Many authorities are struggling to know how best to use statements to assess applications, while applicants and architects can be flummoxed when writing them. In this workshop, you will hear about the possibilities statements can offer, and have a go at writing and reading some.
The workshop will be delivered by Rob Cowan of the training provider Urban Design Skills (www.urbandesignskills.com), and Esther Kurland of UDL. Both Rob and Esther were involved in the development of policy around design and access statements, including the CABE guide. They have been successfully delivering this workshop for RIBA members during 2006/7.
“I liked the practical exercise - it's easy to see what's wrong, but more difficult to solve the problems; I found this session very useful to try and find a solution”
W2 How to read and draw plans and pictures
Friday 4 July 2008, 9.00am – 1.00pm
Palestra, 197 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8AA.
Sometimes it can be very hard to really understand what plans and illustrations are saying. How much is based on the proposal? How much is just for illustration? How does the scale work? Where are we looking from? This workshop will help you learn how to correctly interpret different types of illustration.
It will also show you how to start to create your own scale plans, cross sections, elevations and axonometric so you can explain your own ideas in graphic form.
The workshop will be delivered by Scott Elliott Adams of Urban Design Skills. Scott is an experienced urban designer who has produced hundreds of graphics over the years.
W3: Building for life – how to use it
Tuesday 27 January 2009, 9.00am – 1.00pm
Palestra, 197 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8AA.
Building for Life (BfL) is a national quality assessment tool developed by CABE, English Partnerships, the House Builders Federation and the Civic Trust.
It has recently been updated to assess planning applications, allowing you to consistently check the quality of housing schemes.
The workshop will explain how BfL works and how you can use it. This session will be delivered by leading expert David Birkbeck from Design for Homes. David has been instrumental in the development and use of BfL since its conception.
W4: Design and Climate Change
Dates to be agreed
Following on from our two masterclasses on this subject last year, we are running a new workshop open to all which will look at the tools available to assess the impact of proposals on both mitigation and adaptation requirements. The workshop will build upon the GLA’s supplementary planning guidance on the subject, a recent Urbanbuzz workshop set and CABE’s climate change toolkit.
W5:Inclusive Design – your responsibility
Dates to be agreed
We all know that inclusive places are successful places and that design plays a large part in making sure everyone can use a place with dignity, comfort and easy. This workshop, based on new learning material developed by UDL, is aimed at urban designers, planners and housing and highways officers. It will help you develop a set of questions you can use to assess and negotiate schemes you are involved to help you understand the principles and practicalities behind inclusive design.
Free places are available for subscribing organisations. Other organisations or additional places £175 plus VAT per delegate.
